Meet Louise Sykes: Global Mama and Junior Blvd Founder
WHAT DO YOU DO AND WHAT LED YOU TO THIS CAREER?
A little over two years ago I began developing an Australian-made clothing label, Junior Blvd, for children 0 to 12 years old. We launched in December 2019 and were picked up by Harpers Bazaar Kids and Fashion Kids within weeks. The idea for Junior Blvd came from years of struggling to find the clothing I wanted for my own two boys: Something different and exciting with a retro vibe — and most importantly with some color. Creating, designing, and running this business has been one of the most challenging yet amazing experiences of my life. I’m loving every minute.
WHAT ARE THE NAMES AND AGES OF YOUR CHILDREN?
Josh (10) and Jesse (5).
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CAREER ACHIEVEMENT THUS FAR?
Our very own editorial, shot in Joshua Tree, CA, was published earlier this year by Harpers Bazaar Kids which was an absolute dream come true. Getting the editorial — which I photographed myself — published was incredible; It was a personal goal that I worked towards for months so when it actually happened it was a pinch myself moment. I’ll never forget it.
WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING ASPECT OF BEING A MOTHER?
Seeing my boys treating people with kindness and respect — that is a big thing for me. They can be whatever they want, do whatever they want, but having a good heart is so important.
AND WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING?
The most challenging part of parenthood is trying to stay patient and understanding when things aren’t going the way you want or need them to. Sometimes I’m good at that, and sometimes I’m not so good.
WHAT IS YOUR BEST ADVICE FOR SOMEONE NEW TO YOUR INDUSTRY?
Be prepared for a million setbacks. Never jump the gun and book things or set dates in advance. I learned that the hard way.
WHAT IS YOUR BEST ADVICE FOR A NEW MOTHER?
Do whatever works for you. There are no rules.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR YOU? DO YOU HAVE ANY EXCITING PROJECTS COMING UP?
We are about to launch our second collection! It is very behind schedule and a little in between seasons due to the current circumstances in the world, but it is finally all coming together and I am so proud of each piece. At the end of the day, you just have to go with the flow.
