“Don't compare yourself to anyone. Understand that the art world and fashion world can be as shallow or as deep as you make it and to always err on the side of respect and transparency.”

What do you do and what led you to this career?

I'm an arts worker - artist management, arts writing, art curation, art programming, and museum management. I started off in film and television working on everything from big studio productions to indie films and festivals. Then I met my husband, an artist, and transitioned into managing his studio practice and then eventually opening my own art gallery before going in house at The Broad museum. Watching my husband pour into his talents while still beautifully balancing a family inspired me to pursue my creative endeavors and now we're one big art family!

What are the names and ages of your children?

Leena-Deen, who is 8 years old, Naima, who is 5 years old, and Frankie, who is 4 years old.

What has been your biggest career achievement thus far?

Quitting a dead-end day job and opening my own art gallery when my kids were 2, 4, and 6.

What is the most rewarding aspect of being a mother?

Watching them learn new skills.

And what is the most challenging?

Helping them recover from illness, fear, and pain.

What is your best advice for someone new to your industry?

Don't compare yourself to anyone. Understand that the art world and fashion world can be as shallow or as deep as you make it and to always err on the side of respect and transparency.

What is your best advice for a new mother?

Get used to functioning on little sleep and personal time. In the first couple years, change your diet and your mindset so you can maximize your mind, body, and spirit for the motherhood journey.

What's next for you? Do you have any exciting projects coming up?

I'm growing into my role at The Broad museum in advance of the museum's 5 year anniversary in 2020, so I'd love to invite all the Fashion Mamas for a special family day next year. I'm also launching a mommy and me book project in connection with my creative career juggling marriage and kids.
