Meet Kelly Hoover-Greenway: LA Mama and Lifestyle Writer
What do you do and what led you to this career?
Like many moms, I do a lot of things. My primary line of work has been as an unscripted television producer and development executive (I've done tons of shows for Food Network and HGTV ,and was in-house at MTV and VH1 most recently), but when I had my second son, I started a blog called Mommy Dearest Inc. with two of my friends and discovered how much I loved writing. Though we don't actively run the blog anymore, we have an incredible online community through Instagram and Facebook where we're all about using humor and honesty to navigate motherhood. That led to me writing more, and I'm currently a staff lifestyle writer for the parenting website Romper in addition to writing for other sites and publications.
What are the names and ages of your children?
Griffin who is four years old, and Cooper who is eight years old.
What has been your biggest career achievement thus far?
This is a tough one because I constantly feel like there's so much more I want to achieve. One important achievement would definitely be working my way from a production assistant, when I first started in the industry, to a showrunner, and then executive. It has proven to me what hard work and tenacity can lead to.
What is the most rewarding aspect of being a mother?
Seeing my little guys develop into the people they're meant to be, and cheering them on as they discover who they are.
And what is the most challenging?
All. The. Noise. (at least today that's the most challenging!)
What is your best advice for someone new to your industry?
For television, I think the best advice I could give is to always show up with a positive attitude, learn as much as you can everyday, and always try to anticipate what challenge may come next that you can help with - being proactive is one of the most important traits in that business. For writing, don't doubt yourself! You have a story to tell that people want to hear. Sit down and get it out! As far as having a blog/being an influencer - ignore the trolls. :)
What is your best advice for a new mother?
Build up your village!
What's next for you? Do you have any exciting projects coming up?
This is a year of transition and opportunity for me, and I've got a few things in the works that I can't wait to see what they lead to!
