Jella Roson
Jella is a Filipina American who was born in Manila, Philippines and grew up in Glendale, CA. Currently she lives on the land of the Tongva people, who are Native Americans indigenous to Southern California and the Southern Channel Islands. Her roots have always been something that have defined her, a fact exemplified by her studies as an Asian American Studies major. It was during this time that she found the importance of learning and sharing the stories of one's culture.
Knowing that traditional U.S. History classes through elementary and high school barely touch the surface of the impact and importance of BIPOC in America, Jella is passionate about the concept of teaching Ethnic Studies in schools. She believes that by finding identity and seeing stories reflected back, women of color can feel a sense of belonging. She stays active in the Filipina/o/x American community in Los Angeles by attending events and supporting her fellow creatives. She's also a huge supporter and fan of the Asian American Girl Club, and strives to learn and grow in her advocacy for all.
Over the last two years, she has been working on her arts and culture website, in the heart stories, which is a journal, a collection of narratives, and work that highlights and celebrates Filipina/o/x American entrepreneurs, creatives, and leaders. The aim of the website to tackle the lack of visibility and representation in mainstream media and pop culture by showcasing individuals and groups who put in the work and shape their own realities.
